NECK PAIN

Understanding Neck Pain: Common Causes, Symptoms & Risks

Neck pain is more than just a stiff or sore feeling. It can affect your ability to move, concentrate, or even sleep. In today’s digital lifestyle, where we spend hours looking at screens or phones, neck pain has become a rising health concern for people of all ages.

This blog explores the underlying causes, types of neck problems, and signs you should never ignore.

What Is Neck Pain?

Neck pain refers to discomfort in the cervical spine — the upper part of your spinal cord that supports your head and allows movement. It can involve muscles, nerves, discs, joints, or bones, and may spread to the shoulders, arms, or upper back.

It may come suddenly (acute) or last for weeks/months (chronic).

Common Causes of Neck Pain

  • Poor posture (especially during computer or phone use)

  • Sudden movements or whiplash injuries (e.g., car accidents)

  • Muscle strain from sleeping in an awkward position

  • Herniated or bulging discs in the cervical spine

  • Cervical spondylosis (age-related disc degeneration)

  • Nerve compression

  • Stress or emotional tension causing muscle tightness

  • Infections or inflammatory conditions (less common)

Types of Neck Pain

  • 1. Mechanical Neck Pain

Results from muscle strain or joint problems. Often felt during movement or posture change.

    2. Radicular Pain (Cervical Radiculopathy)

Caused by pinched nerves — pain radiates to arms, hands, or fingers with numbness or weakness.

    3. Chronic Neck Pain

Persists for more than 3 months, often related to spinal degeneration or past injuries.

Symptoms That Shouldn’t Be Ignored

  • Persistent or sharp pain in the neck

  • Stiffness or reduced movement

  • Pain that spreads to the shoulder, arm, or hand

  • Tingling, numbness, or weakness in arms

  • Headaches starting from the neck (cervicogenic headaches)

  • Muscle spasms or tightness

  • Difficulty in maintaining posture or holding the head up
