MUSCLE PAIN
Muscle Pain: What It Means, Why It Happens & When to Worry
Almost everyone experiences muscle pain at some point in life. Whether it’s from physical activity, poor posture, or underlying health conditions — muscle pain can range from mild soreness to intense discomfort.
While occasional pain is normal, persistent or unexplained muscle pain may be a sign that your body needs attention.
What Is Muscle Pain?
Also called myalgia, muscle pain is the aching, throbbing, or stiffness that occurs in any muscle group of the body — including the neck, back, arms, legs, or shoulders. It may affect one muscle or a group and can either be localized or widespread.
Common Causes of Muscle Pain
Overuse or strain (heavy lifting, excessive exercise)
Poor posture or prolonged sitting
Injury or trauma (falls, sudden movements)
Stress or anxiety (causes muscle tightening)
Dehydration or lack of nutrients
Viral infections (like flu or COVID-19)
Chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia or myositis
Types of Muscle Pain
1. Acute Muscle Pain
Occurs suddenly — usually after injury, workout, or unusual activity. Often temporary.
2. Chronic Muscle Pain
Lasts more than 3 months. Often associated with conditions like fibromyalgia, poor posture, or stress.
3. Localized Myalgia
Affects one specific area, such as shoulder or neck.
4. Systemic Muscle Pain
Widespread pain often linked with infections, autoimmune diseases, or medications.
Symptoms to Watch For
Persistent soreness even after rest
Pain with swelling, redness, or stiffness
Weakness in muscles or limited movement
Fatigue or fever along with body aches
Pain that worsens during daily tasks
