BACK PAIN

Understanding Back Pain: Causes, Types, and When to Seek Help

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints worldwide. Whether it’s a dull ache or a sharp shooting pain, it can affect your daily life, work performance, and overall well-being. Back pain doesn’t always come from a single cause — it may result from lifestyle factors, posture issues, injuries, or underlying conditions.

Let’s explore the common causes, types, and warning signs of back pain you should never ignore.

What Is Back Pain?

Back pain refers to discomfort or stiffness in the spinal area, which includes the lower back (lumbar), middle back (thoracic), or upper back and neck (cervical). It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term), and it may occur suddenly or develop gradually over time.

Common Causes of Back Pain

  • Poor posture (especially from prolonged sitting or standing)

  • Muscle or ligament strain (from lifting heavy objects)

  • Spinal disc issues (like herniated or bulging discs)

  • Arthritis or osteoarthritis

  • Scoliosis or abnormal spinal curvature

  • Stress and tension (can cause muscle tightening)

  • Injury or trauma (falls, accidents, etc.)

  • Lack of physical activity or weak core muscles

  • Obesity, which increases pressure on the spine

Types of Back Pain

  • 1. Mechanical Pain

Pain caused by the movement of the spine — usually due to muscle strain, posture, or physical stress.

    2. Radicular Pain (Nerve-related)

Often caused by nerve compression or irritation — such as in sciatica, where pain travels down the leg.

    3. Referred Pain

Pain felt in the back that originates elsewhere (e.g., kidney infections, pelvic issues).

    4. Chronic Back Pain

Lasts for more than three months and may indicate a deeper medical issue like spinal degeneration or inflammatory disease.

Symptoms That Shouldn’t Be Ignored

  • Persistent or worsening back pain

  • Pain radiating to the legs, hips, or arms

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness

  • Difficulty standing, walking, or bending

  • Stiffness after waking up or sitting

  • Sudden sharp pain during activity

  • Unexplained weight loss with back pain
