Headache Pain: More Than Just a Headache

Headaches are one of the most common health complaints, yet they’re often misunderstood. While some are mild and occasional, others can be intense, recurring, and seriously affect daily life. Understanding the different types and causes of headache pain is the first step toward managing it effectively.

What Is Headache Pain?

Headache pain refers to any discomfort in the head, scalp, or upper neck. It can feel like pressure, throbbing, stabbing, or dull aching. Depending on the cause, it may last for minutes, hours, or even days — and can affect work, sleep, and focus.

Types of Headaches (Problems Only)

  • Tension Headaches

    • Dull, constant pain across the forehead or back of the head

    • Often linked to stress, poor posture, or mental fatigue

  • Migraine Headaches

    • Throbbing pain, usually one-sided

    • Can come with nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light/sound

  • Cluster Headaches

    • Sudden, severe pain around one eye

    • May cause tearing, redness, or nasal congestion

  • Sinus Headaches

    • Pressure or pain in the forehead, cheeks, or around the eyes

    • Often tied to sinus infections or weather changes

  • Cervicogenic Headaches

    • Start in the neck and move to the head

    • Caused by spinal misalignment, muscle tension, or injury

When Is a Headache Serious?

  • Headache with vision changes or confusion

  • Sudden, severe pain (often called “thunderclap” headaches)

  • Headache with fever, stiff neck, or numbness

  • Headaches that don’t respond to usual medication

  • Increasing frequency or worsening over time

Who’s Most at Risk?

  • People with high-stress lifestyles

  • Individuals with poor sleep habits

  • Patients with neck strain or poor posture

  • Women (due to hormonal triggers)

  • People exposed to screens or bright lights for long hours
