Foot and heel pain is one of the most common orthopedic complaints — affecting people of all ages. Whether it’s discomfort while walking, standing, or even resting, persistent foot pain can affect your balance, mobility, and overall quality of life.

This blog explains what leads to foot and heel pain, how to recognize it, and when it should not be ignored.

What Is Foot & Heel Pain?

Foot pain refers to any discomfort or inflammation in the foot area, while heel pain specifically occurs in the back or underside of the heel. It may be sharp, dull, burning, or aching, and can worsen with activity or prolonged standing.

Common Causes of Foot & Heel Pain

  • Plantar Fasciitis – inflammation of the tissue under the foot (most common heel pain cause)

  • Achilles Tendonitis – inflammation in the tendon at the back of the ankle

  • Heel Spurs – calcium build-up causing a bony protrusion on the heel bone

  • Flat feet or high arches putting strain on foot muscles

  • Improper footwear or worn-out shoes

  • Prolonged standing or walking

  • Injuries, fractures, or ligament tears

  • Obesity or weight gain putting pressure on the feet
